Data Brokers Are Feeding AI Answers: Why Content Removal Services Are Now a Digital Privacy Issue

Ask ChatGPT about a private person a few years ago, and you'd usually get a polite refusal or a shrug. Ask today, with web search switched on, and there's a decent chance you'll get a summary pieced together from Spokeo, Whitepages, Radaris, and a half-dozen people-search sites you've never heard of. Sometimes it's a city and an age range. Sometimes it's a phone number.

That shift changes what content removal is for. It used to be a reputation problem: a bad article, a mugshot, a nasty review. Now it's a privacy problem too, because the same broker profiles that sat quietly on page four of Google are being pulled into AI-generated answers and handed to whoever asks.

What are content removal services?

Content removal services are professional efforts to remove harmful, outdated, or private information from the websites where it's published or, when deletion isn't possible, to de-index or suppress it so search engines and AI tools stop surfacing it. The work covers data broker opt-outs, platform policy takedowns, DMCA copyright claims, and legal removals for defamatory material.

The definition hasn't changed much. What has changed is the audience. A removal used to protect you from a human scrolling search results. Now it also protects you from a language model that reads those results for them and repeats the highlights with total confidence.

How do data brokers end up in AI answers?

There are three routes, each on a different timeline.

  1. Live retrieval: ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews pull from the open web at the moment someone asks a question. People-search pages are public, keyword-rich, and built to rank for names. That makes them easy pickings for a retrieval system hunting for "John Doe Tampa."
  2. Direct sales to AI developers: Some brokers sell straight into the AI supply chain. A Stanford HAI and RegLab policy brief published in August 2026 found that 32 brokers listed in California's 2026 data broker registry disclosed selling data to generative AI developers.
  3. Training data: Large web scrapes used to train models contain personal records that were public at crawl time. Once that data is baked into a model, nobody can reach in and pull your address back out.

The first route matters most for most people, and it's also the one removal can actually fix. If the source page is gone, a retrieval-based answer has nothing to cite. Training data is far harder to influence, which is exactly why getting listings down early matters. Every month a profile stays live is another month it might be scraped into somebody's dataset.

Illustration of a mechanical data broker machine releasing a stream of personal profile cards toward a glowing AI head labeled "AI Systems," with a shield labeled "Content Removal" blocking the data flow between them.
Content removal acts as a shield between data broker profiles and the AI tools that would otherwise pull them into their answers.

This is not hypothetical

In May 2026, MIT Technology Review reported that Gemini and ChatGPT were returning real people's phone numbers in response to user queries. The same reporting cited a 400% rise in AI-related privacy complaints logged by DeleteMe over seven months.

Chatbot conversations themselves are now being harvested too. The Register reported in March 2026 that browser extensions marketed as free VPNs and ad blockers captured prompts and responses from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and DeepSeek, and clickstream data brokers then made them searchable. The researcher behind that report found prompts containing real names, dates of birth, and medical record numbers. So the flow runs both ways: brokers feed AI, and AI usage feeds brokers.

Why the "it's already public" argument falls apart

Brokers like to say they only compile public records. Fine. But a court filing in one county, a property deed in another, and an old phone listing scattered across three databases aren't the same as a single page that stitches them together under your name, adds your relatives, and estimates your income.

AI tools make that aggregation worse in two ways.

First, they strip away the friction. Nobody has to click through five broker sites anymore. They ask one question and get a tidy paragraph.

Second, they strip away the source. A person looking at a Radaris page can see it's a Radaris page and judge it accordingly. An AI answer delivers the same data in a neutral, authoritative voice, often with the wrong middle initial or a relative who isn't yours, and the reader has no reason to doubt it.

Bad data in a broker profile used to be an annoyance. When an AI assistant repeats it, it becomes a fact people act on.

The law is moving, but slowly and unevenly

California is ahead of everyone. Its Delete Act created DROP, the Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, which opened to residents in January 2026. Brokers had to start processing those requests on August 1, 2026, and they must keep checking for new requests regularly. Stanford's brief counted more than 300,000 Californians who used DROP after launch.

That's real progress. It also has real limits.

  1. Geography: DROP only covers California residents. Stanford researchers note that only four states currently regulate data brokers.
  2. Compliance: Of the 522 brokers registered in California in 2025, 45% reported no information about the rights requests they received, and only 9.2% fully complied with metric reporting requirements.
  3. Friction: In a sample of 250 brokers, 22% required a CAPTCHA to submit a request. One required eight.
  4. Scope: DROP deletes data from registered brokers. It does nothing about a cached copy, a mirror site, an AI model's training set, or an unregistered offshore people-search operation.

If you live outside California, you're still filing opt-outs one site at a time, and many of them quietly relist you a few months later when they refresh their data.

Why content removal services are now a privacy discipline

Removal used to be judged by one test: is the bad thing gone from page one of Google? That test is no longer enough. The better question is whether any system that answers questions about you can still find it.

That means content removal services have to work across a wider surface than they did even two years ago:

  1. Broker and people-search opt-outs: Get the profiles down at the source, then monitor for relisting, which happens constantly.
  2. De-indexing: Use Google's removal tools for personal contact information and outdated content so cached versions stop feeding retrieval.
  3. Platform takedowns: Flag doxxing, impersonation, and non-consensual content under each platform's own policies, which are often faster than any law.
  4. AI answer audits: Run the prompts people actually use, such as your name plus your city or your name plus your employer, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI Overviews, and record what comes back and which sources get cited.
  5. Suppression where removal fails: Some content can't legally be removed. Accurate, well-built pages that rank above it also give AI tools something better to quote.

The fourth step is the one most DIY privacy guides skip, and it's the one that tells you whether the other work actually changed anything. Some reputation firms now treat it as standard. NetReputation, for example, pairs removal work with monitoring of how AI platforms describe its clients, because a takedown that leaves an AI summary unchanged hasn't solved the problem.

Who should care most?

Everyone has some exposure, but the risk isn't evenly spread.

Executives and public-facing professionals

Anyone whose name gets searched before a deal, a hire, or a board vote should assume the searcher is using AI. Home addresses and family names in broker profiles are a physical security issue for executives, not just an embarrassment.

People leaving abusive or dangerous situations

Broker profiles routinely list current addresses and relatives. An AI tool that summarizes those profiles on request removes the last bit of effort standing between a determined person and a location.

Small business owners

Sole proprietors often have their home address tied to an LLC filing, a business license, or a Google Business Profile. Brokers merge that with personal records, and AI answers about the business can end up revealing where the owner sleeps.

Anyone with a common name

This one gets overlooked. If a broker merges your records with someone else's, an AI tool may repeat the mix-up: another person's bankruptcy, another person's arrest. Correcting a merged profile is often harder than deleting it.

What you can do this week

You don't need to hire anyone to start. A few hours gets you a long way.

  1. Search yourself the way AI does: Ask ChatGPT (with search on), Perplexity, and Gemini about yourself using your full name and city. Screenshot the results and note every cited source.
  2. Use DROP if you're in California: One request covers every registered broker. It takes about ten minutes.
  3. Hit the big brokers directly: Spokeo, Whitepages, BeenVerified, Radaris, MyLife, Intelius, and PeopleFinders account for a large share of what surfaces. Each has an opt-out page, and each makes it intentionally annoying.
  4. File Google's personal information removal request: Google lets you request removal of results showing your phone number, home address, or email from its search index.
  5. Set a calendar reminder for 90 days out: Then repeat steps one and three. Relisting is the rule, not the exception.

When the list of sites runs past a few dozen, when you're dealing with defamatory content alongside broker data, or when physical safety is at stake, professional help earns its fee. Firms offering internet privacy protection services can run opt-outs at scale, track relistings, and handle the legal and platform-policy requests that individuals often get stonewalled on.

The bottom line on AI and broker data

The privacy conversation spent years focused on what companies collect. The more pressing question now is what AI systems repeat. Broker data that nobody looked at is turning into answers that anybody can get, delivered without context, without a source label, and often with errors baked in.

Removal is the only lever that works on both ends: it takes data away from the people-search page and from the AI tool that would have quoted it. Waiting for federal law to sort this out is a bad bet. Four states regulate brokers. The other 46 rely on you to file the paperwork yourself.

FAQ

Can I remove my information from ChatGPT or Gemini directly?

Not in the way you'd remove a web page. OpenAI and Google offer privacy request forms, but they can't easily strip data from a trained model. A more effective move is to remove the source pages AI tools retrieve, which changes what search-enabled assistants can find and cite about you.

How long does it take to remove data broker listings?

Most people-search opt-outs process within a few days to two weeks, though some brokers take longer and many relist profiles after a data refresh. California's DROP gives brokers 45 days to process requests. Plan to recheck major brokers every 90 days rather than treating removal as a one-time task.

Are content removal services worth paying for?

They're worth it when you're dealing with dozens of broker sites, recurring relistings, defamatory content, or safety concerns. For a single outdated listing, a DIY opt-out works fine. Professional services earn their cost through scale, ongoing monitoring, and experience filing platform and legal requests that individuals often get denied.

Does deleting a people-search profile change what AI tools say about me?

It changes what search-connected AI tools can retrieve, which is how ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and AI Overviews build most answers about private individuals. It won't erase data already absorbed into a model's training set, which is why removing listings early, before more scraping happens, matters.

What is California's DROP platform?

DROP is the Delete Request and Opt-out Platform created under California's Delete Act. It lets California residents send one deletion request to every registered data broker. It opened in January 2026, and brokers were required to begin processing requests on August 1, 2026.
