Your Email Lives on Someone Else's Server: A Look at Stellar's OST to PST Converter
We spend a lot of time on this blog talking about who holds your data. Your carrier knows where you sleep. Your apps know what you tap. Your airline knows who you fly with and sells it. The pattern is always the same: somebody else is holding the archive, and you're renting access to your own life.
Email is the version of this problem almost nobody thinks about — until the day the access disappears.
If you work at a company running Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft 365, there's a file sitting on your hard drive right now called an OST. It's a cached copy of your mailbox: every email, every attachment, every calendar entry, every contact. It exists so Outlook keeps working when your Wi-Fi drops. And it is completely, deliberately useless without the server that created it.
Delete the mailbox from the server. Crash the Exchange box. Get offboarded by an employer. Have your host get breached and go dark. In every one of those scenarios, the file is still on your disk — and you cannot open it.
That's the problem Stellar Converter for OST exists to solve. We took a look at it, because the underlying question is one we care about a lot: what does it actually take to hold your own records?
First, the honest framing: this is a niche tool
Let's get this out of the way, because most reviews of this category bury it.
If you still have working access to your Exchange server or Microsoft 365 account, you do not need to buy anything. Outlook's built-in Import/Export wizard will produce a PST for free. Microsoft 365 admins can run a compliance export. A broken sync usually resolves by deleting the OST and letting Outlook rebuild it from the server.
Paid OST converters solve exactly one problem: the orphaned OST. The mailbox is gone from the server, the account is deleted from Active Directory, the Exchange instance is dead, or the profile is corrupt beyond repair. The file is all you have left and nothing can read it.
That's a narrow scenario. It's also a genuinely awful one to be in, which is why this software category exists at all.
The scam warning that has to come first
Search "free OST to PST converter" and you will get pages of results. A meaningful chunk of them are adware bundlers, trialware that mangles your data, or straightforward malware.
This is a textbook social engineering setup, and it follows the same script as the toll-text and fake-recruiter scams we've covered before. Someone in a panic, facing a deadline, looking for a free fix, downloading an unsigned executable and pointing it at a file containing every email they've ever sent. It is close to a worst-case data exposure, and the victim opens the door themselves.
So if you're going to run anything against a mailbox archive, run something from a vendor with a paper trail. That's the bar Stellar clears, and it's most of why we're looking at them rather than a free download.
What Stellar Converter for OST actually does
Stellar has been in the data recovery business since 1993 and holds ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certifications plus HIPAA attestation — meaningful credentials for a company whose entire job is handling other people's sensitive files.
The tool itself does what the name says. Point it at an OST file, it scans, it shows you a preview of what it found, and it writes the contents out to a PST you can open in Outlook. It also exports to MSG, EML, RTF, HTML, and PDF if you'd rather have individual files than a monolithic archive.
The features that matter in practice:
- Auto-locate. It finds OST files from configured Outlook profiles on its own, plus a Find function for searching drives manually. Genuinely useful, because most people have no idea their OST is buried in AppData.
- Preview before you commit. You can browse folders and open individual emails before saving anything.
- No file size ceiling. Stellar claims no upper limit and auto-splits output PSTs at around 45 GB to avoid the corruption problems oversized PSTs are famous for.
- Encrypted and IMAP OSTs. Handles files that Outlook's own tools choke on.
- Saved scan state. Scan now, convert later, or on a different machine.
- Folder hierarchy preserved. Your structure survives the trip.
The version we looked at is 14.0.0.1, released July 2026. Windows only, 64-bit only, 4 GB RAM minimum with 8 GB recommended.
The part we like most, and it's a privacy point
The conversion runs entirely on your desktop. Nothing is uploaded.
This matters more than the feature list suggests. Stellar also operates a browser-based conversion service, and there are plenty of competitors who are cloud-only. Using any of them means shipping your complete mailbox to a third party's infrastructure and trusting their retention policy, their access controls, and their breach history with years of your correspondence.
Local processing means the file never leaves your machine. If you take one thing from this review: never upload a mailbox archive to a web-based converter. That advice applies whether you buy this product or not.
Where it falls short
The marketing overclaims. Stellar advertises "100% precision" and describes conversion as guaranteed. No conversion tool can promise that against arbitrarily corrupted files, and treating it as a claim rather than a finding is the right posture. Use the trial to verify your specific file.
The trial won't save anything. You get preview only. So you can confirm your data is recoverable, but you can't confirm the output PST is clean until after you've paid. That's standard for the category — it's still a real limitation.
Windows only. No Mac build, despite Stellar shipping Mac versions of other products.
The pricing ladder is strange. Corporate runs $79, Technician $149, and Toolkit $199. Toolkit includes everything in Technician plus six additional tools for $50 more, which makes the middle tier hard to justify for anyone. The permanent strike-through "discounts" off $99, $199, and $499 are the usual always-on-sale pricing theater.
Licensing terms are muddy. The site references both one-year subscriptions and lifetime licenses without clearly mapping which price buys which. Confirm before you check out.
The social proof is vendor-curated. The MVP endorsements and award quotes live on Stellar's own pages, and the Trustpilot score covers the company as a whole rather than this specific product. Not disqualifying, just worth weighing accordingly.
The trade-off nobody mentions
Here's the thing that belongs in a privacy review and almost never appears in a software one.
Converting OST to PST solves an availability problem and creates an exposure problem.
Your mailbox on the server sits behind authentication, MFA, conditional access, and an audit log. A PST file sitting in your Documents folder sits behind whatever your laptop's disk encryption happens to be. It's a single portable file containing years of correspondence, and anyone who ends up holding your machine holds all of it.
Our whole argument as a carrier is that less retained data means less exposure. That principle doesn't stop applying because the data is yours now. So if you do this:
- Set a password on the PST — Outlook supports it, and it's not on by default
- Verify full-disk encryption is actually enabled (BitLocker on Windows, FileVault on Mac)
- Store the archive on an encrypted external drive rather than your daily-driver laptop
- Convert what you need, not everything — the filter options exist, use them
- Delete the working copies once you've confirmed the archive is good
Recovering your data and then leaving it lying around unencrypted isn't a win. It's a slower loss.
Verdict
Buy it if: you have a genuinely orphaned OST, the mailbox is gone from the server, and the contents matter enough to justify $79. Run the free trial first and confirm your data previews correctly before paying.
Skip it if: you still have server access. Native export is free and does the same job.
Skip the middle tier. If Corporate isn't enough, Toolkit is the better $50.
Stellar's tool is competent, established, and — importantly for us — processes your data locally instead of asking you to upload your life to someone's server. In a category crawling with malware-laden freeware, that's worth something.
The bigger point
The reason an orphaned OST is a catastrophe is the same reason a dead cell tower is a catastrophe: everything routed through one place, and that place failed.
