Quick Overview: Straight Talk and T-Mobile Prepaid

Before we take a look at what the coverage and phone plans look like from each provider, let’s first talk a bit about the two carriers separately as companies so you can get a general idea of what to expect as you begin to make your decision.

You may or may not remember when the first iPhone launched back in 2007. It was a HUGE deal to many tech-heads and has changed the landscape of technology as we know it today. Ever since then the numbers for people acquiring their own cell phone has gone up and up to the point where today an estimated 97% of Americans own a cell phone.

Straight Talk, or Straight Talk Wireless in full, began in 2009, just two years after that initial iPhone launch and became a part of the rapidly growing landscape of wireless carriers. There are many options out there nowadays, like we said in the intro, but Straight Talk prides itself on versatility. They want to create a plan that can work for anyone, whether you’re a frequent phone user that uses their fair share of data or one that only uses their phone for its purpose: calling and texting, with the occasional search on Google Maps to figure out where you need to go.

Straight Talk Wireless is a MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) which is a term used to describe a wireless carrier that doesn’t own their own cell tower(s) and instead piggybacks off of a provider that does. This leads these MVNOs to offer more budget-friendly options to customers. Though there are some downsides to MVNOs including but not limited to data deprioritization. Data deprioritization is “the temporary slowing of data speeds for certain customers in order to give priority to other customers.” This will affect times when you’re in high traffic areas like a concert or sporting event or when there’s network congestion.

With their wide ranging plans and intriguing bundle deals, Straight Talk Wireless has certainly got a lot going for it and there is certainly a lot to discuss as we eventually talk coverage and phone plans.

You most likely have heard of T-Mobile before, with it being a part of the “big three” in wireless alongside Verizon and AT&T, T-Mobile has had its own hat in the ring for a long while. They provide millions with service and have a wide-reaching network. They are actually the current leader in the 5G race beating out both their major competitors Verizon and AT&T. With their 5G network being more readily available in the country, it’s safe to assume why many tend to flock to T-Mobile when they are looking for the best in coverage, especially for their 5G phones. 

T-Mobile doesn’t just have those expensive postpaid plans you might associate them with, they also have their own prepaid phone plans which we are highlighting today. These are plans that don’t lock you down to a contract which is important to a lot of people. Though their prepaid plans might not be as “exciting” as their prepaid plans, they do offer some pretty sweet bonuses compared to other prepaid providers.

What the Coverage Looks Like from Both Providers

Coverage is a hugely important factor to any cell phone plan. Solid coverage in your area and frequently visited places allow you to use your phone’s data with no issue. We’re next going to take a look at Straight Talk’s and T-Mobile’s coverage to see how it fares against each other, first up is Straight Talk.

We mentioned that Straight Talk Wireless is a MVNO and that means they don’t provide their own coverage and instead partners with a provider that does. Normally you’ll find that most MVNOs only work with one provider, but Straight Talk is a bit of an anomaly as they currently work with not just one but four carriers. They “share networks with the best four carriers” which in this case are: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint- (although Sprint was acquired by T-Mobile in 2020 they still provide coverage through their cell towers that were established before the merge). You’d be assumably getting a spattering of coverage from those networks instead of being reliant on just one.

However, that may not always be the case.

Straight Talk Wireless is a brand of TracFone Wireless, Inc. and TracFone was bought by Verizon officially back in 2021, and Verizon has said they eventually want all customers under those umbrellas to fall under Verizon and Verizon only, which could mean that Straight Talk will work with just Verizon. That’s good to keep in mind if you’re thinking of sticking with Straight Talk in the long run after you finish reading this article.

Verizon is the leader in 4G LTE coverage, they’ve advertised in the past as number one and that’s true. They cover over 70% of the country which is a huge feat, especially for those who live in more rural areas who might not have the same signal strength as their friends in more urban areas.

One thing that should always be on your phone carrier checklist is to look at a provider’s coverage map. A coverage map is a map detailing the carrier’s coverage and where it extends to. You’re able to get a view of your home town/city to see what signal you can expect there. Straight Talk’s coverage map works a bit differently than your average coverage map as you have to input your ZIP code and phone model to get an accurate account of their coverage, as an example here is New York with the iPhone 15 128GB:

While Verizon might be the leader in 4G LTE, T-Mobile is currently the leader in the race for 5G. They have been first place in the 5G race for a few years now and it’s a great place to be in, especially since more and more people are getting 5G capable phones and are wanting to experience those 5G speeds for themselves. Though their 5G is unmatched, T-Mobile is third overall in 4G coverage, but not by an incredible amount. If you are someone with a 5G capable phone then you might be more interested in T-Mobile than you initially first thought.

And before you think you might need to sign up for a T-Mobile postpaid plan to get access to their 5G network, you can think again. T-Mobile Prepaid plans are on the same network as their postpaid plans. There’s no discrepancy between the two so rest assured you don't need to worry about paying more for better coverage.

How the Plans Compare: From Price to Features

The Verdict

Now that we have both the coverage and phone plan information from both Straight Talk and T-Mobile Prepaid it’s time to talk which one is better. Both carrier’s prices per month are pretty similar, and that’s a big deciding point for a lot of customers. If you are someone that uses a lot of data then we recommend going with a T-Mobile Prepaid plan. 

With T-Mobile Prepaid your data isn’t deprioritized until 50GBs of use which is a huge threshold for the month, definitely worth the buy if you’re deciding between the two. If you aren’t a heavy duty data user then you could honestly choose which one piques your interest most, if you’re hankering for that Walmart+ Membership and cloud storage Straight Talk isn’t a bad grab, but for anyone that wants more consistent data speeds then T-Mobile Prepaid is the way to go. It comes down to preference but ultimately T-Mobile Prepaid has the slightest edge because of their higher threshold and wider coverage areas.
